When the Aztecs first settled, they settled in a rather marshy area or region of Mexico, near a great lake. Most of the land was not fertile enough to handle plant life. So their intelligent engineers invented the Chinamapa System! A Chinamapa is a floating garden which was great for the Aztecs. (Just between you and me, a Chinamapa is actually a raft of sorts.) The Chinampas were anchored to the bottom of the lake of to a tree in the marshlands. They piled vegetation and reeds on top of the raft to help provide good soil and drainage. On top of this, they piled dirt. They planted seeds in the dirt. It was somewhat difficult to harvest the food since the gardens were floating in marsh water. For a solution, Aztec engineers built mud and stone walls around each floating garden. The walls acted as walkways between the gardens, which was brilliantly impressive.
